Happy Day

Today I’m sharing a card I made for my niece, Erin. The cover photo she uses on her Facebook page inspired me to try my hand at creating a project with flying creatures and shimmery wings. Here’s what I made.

I started by creating a muted background using the four softest shades of Distress Ink that I had: Pumice Stone, Milled Lavender, Spun Sugar, and Tumbled Glass. Then I misted the entire background with my favorite spray – water with Perfect Pearls. It gives an iridescent effect to the background that is lovely (but very difficult to photograph!)

Then I stamped a sentiment from Mention It!, then the dragonfly and “flight path” from Garden Sketches using Archival ink. I love to use black as a contrast to colors, either bold or pastel. I also matted the background on black cardstock to pull it all together on the card front.

I colored the dragonfly wings using blue and green colored pencils and went over it with a clear, glitter gel pen. That added the extra sparkle I was looking for! I filled in the dragonfly body with purple gems and touched up the “flight path” with glitter pen, too. You can see the background iridescence in this detail photo a bit more clearly. While this card is being used for Erin’s birthday, the generic sentiment makes it nice to give to someone special anytime.
